The first thing Jay loved about Linda was her butter cookies. The second was how she sounded when she translated Spanish soap operas. The third thing was her hay-colored hair. He sniffed the dent her head made in the pillow. He found a stray piece of hair in one of her cookies and rolled it around his fingers before putting it into his mouth and swallowing. Once, when she started to love him back, but before she wanted to admit it, she let him weave her hair into many tiny braids held together at the end with aluminum foil. Jay's fingers were stained with paint and they rubbed her scalp. His fingers were the first things Linda loved.
