The Butter Knife

Even though his stomach is flaccid and can't hold up his pants anymore, Eric Desnos is filled with eighty three years. His digestive system is too delicate even for the chicken that tastes like paper. The chicken is cooked in the kitchen adjacent to the cafeteria down the hall. Someday he would like to go into the kitchen and hear the clatter of butter knives and steam. He would like to see people in white and hairnets. He wants to see pancakes being made. Three years ago he had a stroke that made it impossible to speak so now he writes messages in his notebook. He can't eat pancakes anymore because the doctors are afraid his stomach or his bowls will clog or shatter. He now eats oatmeal and soup made especially for him but he misses pancakes and strawberries. He misses his big filled stomach.
