Daryl carried around a shoe box containing three barbie heads, a sea shell, two AA batteries, a melted yellow crayon, a rubber tyrannosaurus rex, and a baggie filled with red plastic beads that reminded him of the shoes Dorothy wore to go home. The translucent beads were the most beautiful thing in his box. They could take him to crystalline green cities and they could take him back to his pee-colored trailer that smelled like toast. They were magical and more powerful than airplanes. Light went into them the color of the air and came out the color of stop lights and blood.
